Emergency Rights was founded by a resident of the South Bronx Community. Founder, Awilda Cordero, a community leader of the South Bronx for over 20 years is dedicated to reducing hardships of families living in this neighborhood.  She grew up witnessing people weighed down by distress without any visible means of help in their situations.  Yet, she knew that the resources were available.  With the help of friends and family, she established Emergency Rights, a non-profit organization to educate the community that there are resources available to them, which they are simply not informed about.  Our organization utilizes partnerships and public services to provide personal support in English and Spanish to the multi–cultural population living in the South Bronx.

The organization acts as an agent to inform residents of the many private and government resources available to them.  We also help people overcome the hurdles, fears and misinformation about these public services.  These resources allow residents to resolve their many burdensome situations and make their lives more manageable.  Our staff and volunteers have helped resolve critical issues such as, aiding fire victims, helping people who suffer from lead poising in obtaining medical care, and advocating for victims of crime and abuse.  We provide these services through both a combination of one-on-one personal assistance as well as large-scale public information events.

Emergency Rights has developed relationships with hospitals, churches, police departments, fire departments, public and private schools, community colleges, elected officials, community boards, business owners, and other community organizations.  We run our free community services in a prominent, central service center on 149th Street, utilizing dozens of part time, bi-lingual volunteers.  Because of our strong relationships with outside organizations and agencies together with volunteers, we are able to provide high-quality services.
